Blogger + Fashionista = Bloganista Mini-Conference
The passion for fashion is alive and well in the Magic City, and Birmingham’s blogosphere is no exception. If you’re unsure about how to take your fashion, fitness, and lifestyle blog to the next level, or just not sure where to begin, the Bloginista Mini-Conference can help.
The conference will feature local speakers with successful fashion, fitness, and lifestyle blogs who will share their insight on best blogging practices, style tips, and even how to land a job using your blog.
I wanted to offer lifestyle bloggers in Birmingham a conference that would be affordable and laid-back, but also informative and fun,” said Javacia Harris Bowser, founder of the Birmingham women’s writing group, See Jane Write Birmingham, who will be putting on the conference.
As the writer of several blogs and magazines herself—including seejanewritebham.com, seejanewritemagazine.com, and writeousbabe.com—Bowser wanted Bloginista to focus on the types of blogs that are important and valuable to many women.
“I decided to target fashion, fitness, and lifestyle bloggers not only because these are genres popular among women, but also because lifestyle bloggers are sometimes frowned upon by some in the social media world. Lifestyle blogging is seen by some as being self-centered, but I disagree. When women share their life stories through their blogs, they empower other women by showing them they’re not alone in their experiences and by encouraging them to share their stories, too,” Bowser explained.
Bloginista’s speakers and panelists have ample experience in sharing engaging stories and captivating their audiences. The bloggers behind samechicdifferentday.com (Alexis E. Barton), mylifewellloved.com (Heather Brown), erikabunker.com, southernfemme.com (Megan LaRussa Chenoweth), buddingfashionista.com (Vanessa Culpepper), chicinacademia.com (Dr. Bertha Hidalgo), myfreelancelife.com (Williesha Morris), tanyasylvan.com, and carlajeanwhitley.com will be on hand to share tips and answer questions for a successful blog.
The speakers will cover a wide range of blogging topics. “I picked bloggers I felt had valuable insight to share whether that was how to use your blog to land freelance gigs and speaking engagements or simply how to find time to blog when you already have a busy life,” said Bowser.
So, “why do you need a conference to blog?” you might be asking. But anyone who has ever ran a blog will tell you that although it’s not easy, it can be very rewarding.
“Blogging is hard. It often takes a long time to build a readership and most people never make any money from their blogs directly. You need a community to urge you to keep going,” Bowser explained. “These folks can also help you see your blog in a new way and show you how you can make money from your blog in ways you hadn’t imagined before.”
And if you’re thinking about starting a blog, but have some reservations, Bowser presents a couple of things to consider.
“I blog by the belief that it’s about people, not page views. You build relationships through blogging and those relationships can lead to great friendships,” said Bowser. “Blogging can build great professional relationships, too. One of our panelists got a new job because of her blog. One of her readers worked for a publishing company and from what he saw on the blog knew she’d be a great fit for a social media position available at his company.”
Bowser knows firsthand the kinds of relationships that can come out of blogging. In fact, it was blogging that led to the creation of her women’s writing group, See Jane Write.
“When I first moved back to Birmingham [from Louisville, Kentucky], I was very unhappy here until I started building a community through SeeJaneWriteBham.com.”
However, even if you’re a blogger who doesn’t focus on fashion, fitness, and lifestyle, you can still benefit from Bloginista Mini-Conference since it will cover topics such as how blogs can boost your business, how a blog can become your business, and how to use your blog to land freelance writing gigs, speaking engagements, a full-time job, and more.
Bloganista Mini-Conference will take place on Saturday, July 19 from 10:00am to 4:30pm at the Homewood Public Library at 1721 Oxmoor Rd. Check out the conference schedule and order tickets at http://thebloganistaconference.eventbrite.com/.
